Agapornis Genome Study

Who we are

The Agapornis genome study forms part of a PhD degree at North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa. This degree was completed in 2019.

Dr. Henri√ętte van der Zwan obtained her BSc(Agric) Animal Science and Animal Genetics degree from the University of Pretoria in 2005. In 2009 she obtained her MSc(Agric) Animal Breeding degree from the same university. In 2019 she was awarded her Doctoral degree on the work done during this study.

She has a passion for animal breeding and the genetic principles behind it. The main focus of her PhD degree is to determine the genetic code of the lovebird genome and to develop a panel of markers that can be used to determine parentage of the birds.
